So is a quad for you? Here are our thoughts: In the last few months I've been lucky enough to test some of the upcoming designs from a lot of board makers, both behind the scenes and at some events where Pro riders were putting them through their paces! It's also been interesting to get the feedback off the riders themselves ansd see how they are performing....
Is a Quad Better than a single fin, twin fin, Tri-Fin?? Is it for you?! - the real answer is that you have to try these boards, and get a bit of advice as to getting the most out of them and adapting your sailing style to suit, and then make the judgement! It is all really down to personal preference, and somewhat the conditions you are looking to sail them in.
- In brief no one board or fin type is best, you really have to find out what works best for you!
Characteristics of a quad in brief: - The four fins will actually help with early planing and upwind performance, and provide a lot of drive and grip on the wave and for jumping, so not to be confused with a twin fin! From here it will depend on the board and fin placement/sizes. By placing the fins quite forward, with smaller front/outer fins and combining this with thin rails in the tail can make for a board that will turn really tight and snappy, but not slashy/skatey like a twin fin. Drive for jumps should be pretty good and overall make for a superb allrounder on the wave. Be warey of large front fins as this will make the board stiff and directional.
Which Quad should I consider? Why? - For me there is only one answer on that one and it's simple, QUATRO. Keith Taboul has been shaping custom Quads for several years now, and many of the pro's boards (regardless of sponsor or artwork) are made by him personally, as the production boards are simply not up to scratch. Quatro are the only brand to have put serious development time into this design, and will release it when it's ready and not rush a trend into production for the sake of marketing!
There are already a few out there, and more coming from other brands in 2010/2011, but I have to say that having tried them all this one really surprised me on performance and just how easy/allround it was to use! Ben Proffit has been using their final version now in all his contests before it's release in Jan with great results.
We'll have to see if this is more of a marketing trend by some brands, but I would say that the new Quad from Quatro might have something to offer, almost falling between the single and twin fin on overall performance....well worth a try if you are curious!
When can I try one? - The first Quattro Quads are being made as we speak, in very limited numbers as a special edition on a pro construction, with MFC fins. Due to land on UK waters in January.
Pura Vida Boardriders has secured two in 75 litre and two in 85 litre, with both available to demo/test right away! Check out the latest Boardseeker review of both the 85 and 75 Quads here.
